So many games, so many ways to travel. From snowboards to horses, to jetpacks and parachutes, games have provided us with countless means of getting around. Some are more memorable than others, especially if they let you take out the enemy along the way. Take it or leave it, here’s my Top Ten for the Best Combat Vehicles in Gaming.
10. Yoshi – Mario Series
Real-talk, aside from the Fire Flower and Super Leaf power-ups, Yoshi is a gift of grace in the Mario world. Not that Mario is the hardest game out there, but Yoshi makes levels just a tad bit easier. While mounted you can pretty much run a level and spam that good ole tongue action attack. Whoever decides to get in the way gets the business. Even better, you can use them as a projectile attack right out of the jaws of Yoshi-san.
9. Ebon Hawk – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars fans everywhere squealed with joy when they first piloted their beloved ship in the original KoTOR. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Millennium Falcon, this freighter not only housed your lovable crew, but sported a mean mounted turret that let you blast Imperials and Red Sun slavers. This is the Ebon Hawk, one bad ass piece of ship.
8. Jehuty – Zone of the Enders
In Zone of the Enders, you piloted Jehuty, a giant mech with an arm cannon and retractable energy blade. With it’s wing thrusters and force shield, you got to live out your anime dreams in fast paced aerial dog fights. Now this is how you travel space in style.
7. SV-001 - Metal Slug
Don’t be fooled by it’s size or cartoonish appearance. The Super Vehicle 001 is one of the baddest assest…uh, tanks around. Fully armed with a main canon, twin vulcan canons, and grenades this vehicle is the pinnacle of carnage.
Ikaruga is the king of bullet hell shooters, and the titular ship is as tough as they come. It’s polarity function allows it to completely shield itself from all enemy fire, as long as it’s the same color. Name another sweet ride that lets you totally ignore an endless stream of bullets. Go on, I dare ya.
5. Rush – Mega Man
When evil robots are on the loose and you just don’t have what it takes to get over a large gap, Rush comes to the rescue. The Blue Bomber’s faithful robotic dog has been by his side ever since Mega Man 3, always prepared to lend a hand. Whether transforming into a coil, a hoverboard, or a submarine, Rush was all around awesome.
4. Sweet Tooth – Twisted Metal
What’s more terrifying than clowns? Clowns driving flaming ice cream trucks that spew missiles and high caliber rounds. Sweet Tooth has been terrorizing gamers ever since his first appearance in the original Twisted Metal, and he continues to be a fan favorite. Did I mention it also transforms into mech? Because it does. Booyah.
3. Laughing Wolf/Crying Octopus – Metal Gear Solid 4
Move over Rex. Step aside Ray. And the Gekkos? Pfft, no hulking machine could contest to the two baddest bishes of the Beauty and the Beast Unit: Laughing Wolf and Crying Octopus. Snake held his own against a couple of “nuclear-equipped, walking death-mobiles”, but what about a mechanical Canis with a railgun or a bomb-wielding octopus with optic camouflage? Technically they’re vehicles, since they provide movement. Deal with it.
2. Rhino – GTA
GTA is known for it’s realistic scenery, shooting, and crazy dialogue, but what happens when you get a tank? All hell breaks loose, things start going kaboom. Earn yourself a six star wanted level and you were sure to see one. Or maybe you were like me, and unlocked it before you were supposed to using cheats. However you obtained it, the tank was responsible for endless hours of mayhem. The Rhino is probably the best tank I’ve ever played with. The damage it dealt was ridiculous. Tap any car and it blew up automatically!
1. SR-2 Normandy – Mass Effect 3
Okay guys, I know most of you wouldn’t consider the Normandy SR2 a combat vehicle. Well, that’s too bad because it was loaded with as many advanced weapon systems as its predecessor, packing javelin disruptor torpedoes (that effed up a HUGE Collector vessel). If you had 15,000 Platinum to spare you can buy the Thanix Cannon upgrade if you plan to do some serious damage. The SR-2 wasn’t lacking in defenses either . Between kinetic barriers, heavy ship armor and the anti-missile/fighter craft lasers, it wasn’t going down without a fight.
Also, Mordin, we love you.
